Moleskin Helps Treat Painful Blisters
The term ‘moleskin' brings to mind the picture of the skin taken off of a mole (a small furry animal). However, in reality, it is a heavy cotton twill fabric. It is used for several purposes including making tough and resistant clothing even for military use, as a cover for notebooks and such writing material and also in first-aid. It is durable and tough and allows dirt to be easily brushed off, which helps in keeping it clean. Its primary manufacturing source is Great Britain.
Hikers and backpackers especially find it to be one of their best friends. Blisters can be a painful after-effect of extensive outdoor walking while wearing hiking boots or similar footwear. Blisters don't seem like much of a threat but can practically stall your movement and seriously undermine your recreational or competitive pursuits.
How does Moleskin Prevent and Relieve Blisters?
Yes, you can pop a blister and be done with it but that may cause more suffering due to possible infection. For first-aid use, moleskin comes with a soft pile of sheared cloth on one side and adhesive on the other side. Treating a blister requires covering it with moleskin before putting the boots on. If you ever had a blister you would know that covering it with something can be painful. How do you do it then?
Dry the area around the blister with a soft cloth or foot powder. Cut a patch of moleskin slightly bigger than the circumference of the blister, then cut a hole the size of the blister, in the middle of the patch. Afterward, peel the adhesive cover and put the moleskin patch over the blister so that the blister fits in the hole. This prevents the blister from rubbing against the surface of the shoe and prevents further irritation or infection. For larger blisters you may use multiple layers of moleskin so that the patch becomes thick enough to keep the blister within the hole and not rub against the surface. If the size of the blister is too big, you might want to use mole-foam instead of moleskin. It is similar to moleskin but also has a thick underside coating which raises the height of the padding and prevents the blister from rubbing.
Moleskin should be removed at night to let the blister area breathe and if needed, it may be reapplied the next day. Blisters can be prevented by paying attention to the warning signs such as hot spots and chafing. Wearing comfortable shoes that are not too tight also helps prevent blisters.
