Neo-Classicism as first international style?

The French Revolution (1789-99) leading to liberty and equality of France. The American Revolution (1775-83) leading to independence of British North American Colonies like the USA. The Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) leading to independence of Haiti, the War of The Austrian Succession (1740-48), the Great Northern War (1757-63) establishment of Russia as a Great European Power.

It was also the time of colonization of the World by European Empires and heroic battles of independence. Industrial and scientific revolution with great inventions like ‘Watt’s steam engine’, ‘Steam road vehicle’, ‘lightning rod’, ‘photosynthesis’, ‘lithographic printing process’, ‘electric motor’, ‘photography’, ‘bicycle’, and much more, were what caused rise of capitalism and brought cultural and ideological changes towards democracy and human rights.

Among important, influential figures we could find philosophers such as F. Bacon or I. Kant, composers as J.S. Bach and W.A. Mozart, poets like M. De Sade or Voltaire. Were not discipline in art, politics, science, social science, religious, arts, industry, business and philosophy, which was static and unchangeable.

It was the Age of Enlightenment in fact, a ‘New Age’ spread from 1750 - 1830. The modern value of system and industrial inventions improved physical and mental communication between people in Europe and beyond. It was not only essential to faster development of civilization but always integrated the people in their demanding and pursuits. Archaeological researches with excavation of antique civilisations in Herculaneum or Pompeii, European scientific publication about ancient cultures and even war expedition of Napoleon to Egypt aimed attention of lots of people to lost civilisation of Greek, Roman and also Egyptian and Etruscan. Rich citizens of France or England brought examples of ancient art such as sculptures, objects and fragments of stone buildings to build their own private collection. Artists from the whole Europe tended to ancient places in Italy to study classical ideas and buildings construction. Educational journeys of good-birth young people from wealthy European families, painters, poets and other passionate of antique ruins, called ‘Grand Tour’ were almost typical to undertake it. Next, educational institutions were established like Academie de France in Rom, Academie Royale d’Architecture and L’Ecole des Arts in Paris, Royal Academy in England and School of Architecture in Germany.

After one decade of Baroque, including Rococo, classical ideas of restrain, purity and taste were like vision for ‘New Age’. Ideas of modern philosophers and theologians found confirmation in ancient mentality. Humanist philosophy of Greek and their idealism were great opportunities to create ideal way of rules for fresh republics of France or America. Neo-classicism as movement was mostly complicated because of particular countries and even particular social or powerful communities.

There were many of variants of new style and several of trends inside it. Earliest, classical wave felt the England at the beginning of 18th century, where first publications about ancient world found the reflection in work of architects such as Colen Campbell, Lord Burlington and William Kent. Because their design was mainly based on ideas of Italian architect from 16th century, Andrea Palladio, indeed this style was named Palladianism, later developed by other great English architect like Robert Adam in neoclassical era, later adopted by American architect Thomas Jefferson and others. Main features of Palladianism were clear, horizontal lines, underlined often by columned porticos or pilasters facades. Using rustication or roofs balustrades, created in symmetrical order buildings were making impression of being more static and noble. Intermediate style between Palladianism and main-stream of English Neoclassicism, which includes classical influenced Georgian style (1714-1830) and Regency style (1811-1820), was the most splendorous, in fact, Adam style (1728-1792), characterised by flat grotesque panel decorations, pilasters, decorative motifs as ribbons or swags, framed urns, vases, scrolls, sphinx and medallions and what is more using wide colours schemes. Adam style was inspiration for next generation of English architects and many in Europe because it reflected clear ancient ideas of Greek, Roman and also Etruscan style with personal taste. Examples of English neoclassicism are placed in Scottish Edinburgh as objects designed by Robert Adam, his father and younger brother and his main rival William Chambers as well, in London such as creations of James Gibbs and John Nash who represented Regency era with Greek revival touch but also in British colonies like Australia or Indie, for example, where lots of neoclassical mainly governments buildings were placed like in Calcutta. In comparison with it French neoclassicism was influenced by revolutionary movements and Napoleon’s expedition. Egyptian revival was a part of French variety when Napoleon was coming at the end of 18th century. First royal commission of Louis XV, next emperor aspiration of Bonaparte brought many of great, spectacular examples of French Neoclassicism including Napoleon’s Empire variation, created by architects as Jacques Soufflot, Jacques Gabriel, Nicolas Ledoux, Pierre Fontaine and Charles Clerisseau which was working for foreign commissioners as Catherina the Great in Russia like many other artists. Conception of French architecture constituted pure, basic ancient ideas of classical orders including entablature. So, columns, friezes, pediments, pilasters were the main features. The main figure of Neoclassicism in Italy was Battista Piranesi. Because architecture in Italy was mainly known as a Rome’s, which was a natural consequence of antique tradition, excavation ancient ruins in Pompeii or Herculaneum made Italian neoclassicism only more formal and richest about ‘new’ architectural vocabulary. United States, first adopted Palladianism heritage, next developed its own transformation as Federal style, peaked between 1780 and 1820, which was characterised by oval outline of interiors, free-standing stairs and sometimes buildings, free-standing porticos, delicate mouldings and slender proportion. More, Karl Schinkel and Leo von Klenze in Germany, Casper Harsdorff in Denmark, Louis Masreliez in Sweden, Juan de Villanueva in Spain, Ivan Starov in Russia or Dominik Merlini in Poland and Lithuanian.

Neoclassicism was present in architecture, in art of interior decorations, in all disciplines of art, was inspiration for designers and creators of furniture, homewares, textiles, porcelain and services which were a synonym of wealth. Perversely, as 1800 years ago, classic ideas of humanism and beauty, nobility and glorious were main directions of contemporary world as in 18th Century the same ideas became main concept for entire world, indeed.
