Stuff (Japan) (Shm) $79.99 Stuff never won the respect of bop snobs, but that isn't what they were going for. The band's specialty was an accessible, groove-oriented blend of jazz, R&B, and pop, and not everyone who bought their records was a jazz expert. Though some of Stuff's fans knew a lot about jazz, others were Average White Band or Chaka Khan fans who bought the occasional Grover Washington, Jr. album. Stuff's LPs weren't amazing, but they were generally likable. That is the case with this self-titled debut album, which was produced by Herb Lovelle and Tommy LiPuma and earned the band a loyal following in 1976. While congenial tunes like "Reflections of Divine Love" and "Foots" aren't breathtaking, they're pleasant and easy to like. Guitarist Eric Gale, drummer Steve Gadd, and other Stuff members were capable of a lot more. Nonetheless, the band's recording career was off to a decent, if unremarkable, start with this 1976 LP. ~ Alex Henderson |

More Stuff (Japan) $79.99 Stuff's sophomore album More Stuff was quite similar to its first LP. Once again, the band offered a pleasant and good-natured, if unremarkable, blend of jazz, R&B, and pop. Many jazz critics gave this record negative reviews, attacking it for being commercial and groove-oriented. But Stuff never claimed to be Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers and tunes like Eric Gale's "Honey Coral Rock" and Cornell Dupree's "Subway" weren't meant to be straight-ahead bop. Stuff wanted to attract R&B and pop fans as well as jazz fans, and its members would have been happy to learn that someone who was into Marvin Gaye and Tyrone Davis also appreciated More Stuff. The fact that Stuff produced this LP with Charlie Kipps and the late Van McCoy says a lot; McCoy enjoyed one of disco's definitive smashes with 1975's "The Hustle," and he was also the guy who wrote Gladys Knight & the Pips' 1964 hit "Giving Up." So there was no way that an album McCoy co-produced was going to be a serious bop record. More Stuff isn't a masterpiece, although it's a decent LP that fared well in the crossover/NAC market. ~ Alex Henderson |

Struttin' Our Stuff $12.99 Full performer name: Bill Wyman/Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings.Bill Wyman & The Rhythm Kings: Bill Wyman (vocals, bass); Georgie Fame, Geraint Watkins (vocals, organ); Paul Carrack, Mike Sanchez, Beverley Skeete (vocals); Terry Taylor (guitar, organ); Peter Frampton, Martin Taylor, Eric Clapton, Albert Lee (guitar); Frank Mead (saxophone); Nick Payn (horns, harmonica); Nick Pentelow, Andy Hamilton, Pete Beachill, Andy Macintosh, Martin Drover, Nick Pantelo (horns); Geoff Grange (harmonica): Dave Hartley (piano, organ); Max Middleton (piano); Gary Brooker (organ); Graham Broad (drums, percussion); Ray Cooper (percussion); Melanie Redmond, Keeley Smith, Natasha Kristie, Zoe Nicholas, Maggie Ryder, Barbie Carey, Susie Web (background vocals).Includes liner notes by Mike Read.In the sixteen years it took for bassist Bill Wyman to issue a follow up to his 1982 self-titled release, a lot had happened, most notably his resignation from one of the greatest all-time rock bands, the Rolling Stones. For Wyman's 1998 release, STRUTTIN' OUR STUFF, this ex-Stone recruits quite an impressive supporting cast of players (dubbed 'The Rhythm Kings'), including Peter Frampton, Eric Clapton, Albert Lee, and Georgie Fame. For a man with such a pedigree, Wyman keeps a surprisingly low profile on STRUTTIN'. The majority of the tracks are covers, including Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Green River," the blues rock standard "Tobacco Road," and an obscure original by Jagger-Richards, "Melody." STRUTTIN' OUR STUFF is definitely Wyman's best solo release yet. |

Stuff, The $8.48 When a group of miners discovers a mysterious but delicious white substance bubbling up from the earth, a conglomerate markets the gooey, addictive fluff as a dessert in this tongue-in-cheek horror spoof from former NBC scriptwriter Larry Cohen. When a new product called The Stuff begins eating into the market share of traditional frozen desserts, the dairy industry hires former FBI agent Moe Rutherford (Michael Moriarty) to investigate the competition. With the assistance of deposed ice-cream magnate Chocolate Chip Charlie (Garrett Morris), Rutherford discovers that the substance is actually a sentient entity that takes over its victims' minds while eating away at their bodies from the inside. Meanwhile, young Jason (Scott Bloom) realizes that his family's strange behavior has something to do with the dessert product in their refrigerator that refuses to stay in its carton, and he launches a campaign to destroy the threatening confection. Soon Rutherford and Jason must team up with Nicole Kendall (Andrea Marcovicci), The Stuff's unwitting advertising mastermind, and Vietnam vet-turned-militia leader Colonel Spears (Paul Sorvino) to save America from its own sweet tooth. Sorvino and Moriarty would go on to co-star in NBC's hit police procedural, Law & Order. Icy-eyed As the World Turns hunk Brian Bloom appears alongside his brother, Scott Bloom. The Stuff's television connections also extend to cameos from Clara Peller, pitchwoman for the Wendy's Where's the beef? campaign, and Abe Vigoda of Barney Miller fame. Actresses Brooke Adams, Tammy Grimes, and Laurene Landon also appear in parodic commercials for the titular dessert. ~ Brian J. Dillard, Rovi |
