Sids ... Which babies are most at risk?
What is SIDS?
SIDS, or sudden death and inexplicable of an infant under one year kills about 2,500 children each year and is the leading cause of death in that age group, with 90 percent cases in infants younger than 6 months and occurs more frequently during the cold months of the year.
SIDS is not any illness or disease is the diagnosis that occurs when a child under one year of age dies suddenly, strike without warning, usually in an apparently healthy child.

What causes SIDS?

Numerous studies continue to study the brain, autonomic nervous system, child care and sleep environments, infection and immunity, and genetics for answers.
Which babies are at greater risk?
Although the exact cause of this syndrome remains unknown, some risk factors are identified, such as:
- Tummy sleeping
- The first of these risk factors is stomach sleeping. The risk of sudden infant death has been found to be 1.7 to 12.9 per cent higher if you sleep face down on instead of your back. Numerous studies have found a higher incidence of SIDS babies placed on their stomachs to sleep than among those who sleep on their backs or sides. Some researchers have hypothesized that stomach sleeping when the baby sleeps on her stomach-down is more likely to overheat, puts pressure on the jaw of a baby, so the narrowing of the airways and makes breathing difficult ie pauses to breathe, and breathe again exhaled air alone. A As the baby breathes exhaled air, the oxygen level in the body drops and carbon dioxide accumulates and may contribute to SIDS.
Infants who succumb to SIDS may have an abnormality in the arcuate nucleus, the part of the brain that control breathing and arousal during sleep. If the baby is breathing stale air and not getting enough oxygen, the brain usually triggers the baby wakes and cries. However a problem with the kernel arched could deprive the baby of this involuntary reaction and put you at greater risk of SIDS.
- Sleeping on a soft surface
A soft mattress or with bedding, stuffed toys, quilts, comforters, sofas, waterbeds, bean bags and other soft surfaces or a pillow near the face are unsafe for a baby to sleep and increase an increased risk of SIDS. Similar to sleeping on your stomach, soft surfaces increase the chance that your baby will encounter problems with breathing or overheating. Create a small enclosure around the baby's mouth and trap exhaled air. As the baby breathes exhaled air, the level oxygen in the body and drops of carbon dioxide accumulates. - Overheating
There is strong evidence that Overheating can significantly increase the risk of SIDS. Overheating can be caused by overheated room, wrap or cover the baby with blankets too, especially when the baby has a fever or respiratory disease infection. Keep the room at a temperature that is comfortable for an adult with a short-sleeved shirt. - Exposure to secondhand smoke
Studies indicate the risk of a SIDS baby increases with the number and length of exposure cigarettes around the child each day. - The consumption of alcohol, snuff and the mother drug
Drinking alcohol, smoking and drug use during pregnancy can endanger the healthy development of baby. - Teenage mother

Boys are more likely by increased risk of SIDS than girls by a ratio of 1.5 to 1. - Ethnic background
Black Infants Are twice as likely and Native American children are three times more likely to die of SIDS than Caucasians. Asians, who have a cultural preference to place babies on their backs, have a lower than average risk of SIDS. When they migrate to North America and began to put the babies in their bellies, their rates of SIDS rose.
The growing public awareness of SIDS and the steps to reduce the risk of sudden infant death will hope fewer parents searching for answers in the future to protect their children SIDS tragedy.

A Healty Baby! Can you find a better reason to quit smoking?
When a woman who smokes starts to think about having children, she has to think quitting. Women who smoke during pregnancy take a huge risk to the health of your unborn baby. When smoked during pregnancy, so does your baby. If your health is not enough to make you quit, then the health of your baby should be. If she is willing to take that risk to the health of your baby's potential, perhaps it not ready.
Why am I so hard on the subject? Smoking during pregnancy affects the health of your baby before, during and after your baby is born. There is a higher probability that you will lose the baby during pregnancy. The baby may be born early, before the lungs are ready, so he or she has trouble breathing. The baby will be smaller and more likely to need special care and stay longer in hospital. Some may die at birth or within the first year.
Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, and the worst of these substances are nicotine and carbon monoxide carbon. When a woman smokes during pregnancy, toxins get into your bloodstream. 2 Make a list of your reasons for wanting to quit smoking, by itself, and for your baby.
3 Talk with your family and friends. Support can make all the difference.
Ask four people nonsmokers to smoke around you.
5 Do not go to places where many people are smoking, like bars or clubs, and smoking sections of restaurants.
6 Set a Closing Date, the sooner the better. If a woman is unwilling to set a date, you can begin to reduce the consumption of snuff.
7 You can test the four s D ': delay, deep breathe, drink water, and do something else.
8 Keep mints or gum (preferably sugarless) on hand for those times when you have the urge to smoke.
9 Eat less caffeinated drinks, caffeine can stimulate the desire to smoke. Also avoid alcohol, which can also increase their anxiety and smoking can be harmful to your baby.
10 Stay active to keep your mind off smoking and help relieve stress: walking, exercising, reading a book, or try a new hobby.
11 Change your habits related to smoking. If you smoke while driving or when feeling stressed, other activities try to replace smoking.
12 I think the best way for a pregnant woman to stop smoking is to think your baby is born healthy.
How Second-hand smoke affect pregnancy? If you are exposed to secondhand smoke increases risk of you and your baby to develop lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema, allergies, asthma and other health problems.
Babies exposed to secondhand smoke can also develop reduced lung capacity and are increased risk of sudden death syndrome (SIDS).
Smoking after birth. It makes no sense at all for her again smoking! Even after the baby is born, the fact that smoking can harm your baby.
